EnergySmart Volunteer Coordinator

Position Description: The Alliance for a Green Economy (AGREE) seeks a part-time Volunteer Coordinator for our EnergySmart CNY program, an exciting project developed in partnership with other agencies and organizations in our region. As New York transitions to an inclusive, clean energy economy, all residents, businesses and communities have opportunities to benefit from this transition. These opportunities include clean energy careers, improved energy affordability, home improvements, and rebates for businesses and transportation. EnergySmart CNY connects people to these opportunities and solutions.

The Volunteer Coordinator will report to the EnergySmart CNY Outreach Coordinator and will be part of the EnergySmart CNY outreach team, working to reach diverse communities throughout Central New York with information about energy- and cost-saving programs, clean energy opportunities, and workforce development. The outreach team delivers information in many settings, including, but not limited to: outreach at community events; our own events; one-on-one phone calls and canvassing; helping people navigate energy efficiency and heat pump program applications; troubleshooting obstacles to clean energy; and coordinating with local contractors to provide accurate information on the programs.

The ideal candidate for the Volunteer Coordinator position is a motivated, organized, and dependable person who can help our outreach team identify volunteer needs and who can recruit and build the capacity of volunteers to meet these needs. Candidates with previous experience working with volunteers will be prioritized.

The Volunteer Coordinator will recruit volunteers to participate with the outreach team in events and other activities. The Volunteer Coordinator will hold volunteer orientations and one-to-one or group training sessions as needed and will assign volunteers to tasks in coordination with the rest of the EnergySmart CNY team. The Volunteer Coordinator will also share regular updates with volunteers to keep them motivated and up to date on program changes.

 Responsibilities include:

  • Work in coordination with and directly report to the EnergySmart CNY Outreach Coordinator
  • Develop understanding of EnergySmart CNY’s operations and offerings
  • Work with the EnergySmart CNY Outreach Team and partners to develop a list of program areas where volunteers could add capacity
  • Develop volunteer recruitment materials and processes for tracking prospective and active volunteers
  • Develop volunteer orientations and training materials. Trainings should include an introduction to our tabling and event methods, and include information about the technologies, measures, and programs being promoted
  • Support the Outreach Team and other EnergySmart CNY partners in integrating volunteers into their activities
  • Attend and assist with community events as needed
  • Promote the success of the EnergySmart CNY Community Campaigns, including collaborating closely with the Community Campaign Manager
  • Stay in touch with active volunteers as a point person and source for information and motivation

Location and travel requirements: This is largely a work-from-home position that requires frequent in-person presence at meetings and at outreach events throughout Central New York. Candidates must reside within Onondaga, Madison, Cayuga, Oswego, or Cortland Counties.

Compensation: The compensation for this position is $25-30 per hour, based on experience. This is a part-time position with an expectation of an average of 20 hours per week. For the right candidate, this position could be a full time, 35-40 hours per week role. Travel to events is compensated.

Basic qualifications:

  • At least 2 years prior work, intern, or volunteer experience demonstrating dependability, teamwork, and public engagement
  • Ability to stay organized and follow through on details in a remote working environment
  • Competency with remote meeting software (e.g. Zoom), word processing (such as Google Docs and Microsoft Word), spreadsheets, and accurate data entry
  • Commitment to expanding the green economy to all
  • Flexible schedule – some nights and weekends will be needed to attend workshops and events at times that working people can attend
  • Access to reliable transportation and an ability to transport workshop materials and volunteers to events
  • An ability to commit to working at AGREE for at least a year

Additional desired qualifications/experience

  • Experience recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers
  • Project management experience
  • Graphic design, multimedia, website, and other communications skills
  • Community connections to the region’s disadvantaged communities

How to Apply: The position will be filled as soon as suitable candidates are identified; early application is encouraged. Applicants should submit a cover letter and a resume to avni@agreeny.org.
